Design a colorful, formatted Message Of The Day with a live preview of the Minecraft multiplayer list — paste straight into server.properties.
Create MOTDMOTD Editor
Type, color, and format your Message of the Day with a live preview — then paste the code into server.properties.
Use a Minecraft MOTD generator to visually build your message. You can type your text, apply color codes and formatting (bold, italic, strikethrough), and preview exactly how it will appear in the server list. The tool then outputs the formatted code to paste directly into your server.properties file.
MOTD stands for "Message of the Day." It's the text that appears below your server's name in the Minecraft multiplayer server list. Server owners customize the MOTD to display server info, rules, version numbers, or a welcome message using Minecraft's formatting and color codes.
Minecraft uses the section symbol (§) followed by a color code character (for example, §a for green, §c for red). A MOTD editor/generator handles this automatically — you simply select your colors visually and the tool generates the correct formatting codes ready for your server.properties file.
A Minecraft MOTD supports two lines of text. Each line can be up to 45 characters in practice before it gets cut off in most server list displays, though there is no hard-coded character limit. Use a MOTD generator with a live preview to make sure your message displays correctly before going live.
Open your server.properties file (found in your server's root directory), find the line that starts with motd=, and replace the existing value with the formatted text from your MOTD generator. Save the file and restart your server for the changes to take effect.
